This Week's Bake: 4 Sourdough Hot Cross Buns
Easter wouldn't be Easter without hot cross buns. Traditionally eaten on Good Friday to mark the end of lent, buns marked with a cross date back to 6th Century Greece and have been enjoyed ever since. The first official record of Hot Cross Buns dates back to 1733, featuring in a London street cry that was probably heard in East End markets, "Good Friday comes this month, the old woman runs with one or two a penny hot cross buns"
Our buns are naturally leavened with a sourdough starter, spiced with cinnamon and cardamom and mixed with plenty of tea-infused raisins. Delicious on their own, or sliced and toasted with butter, filled with ice cream, or even with a bacon or cheese filling (I know it sounds weird, but try it...)
